Lagos Government Warns Churches, Mosques, Nightclubs, and Others Against Noise Pollution

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has issued a stern warning to churches, mosques, nightclubs, bars, and event centers regarding noise pollution in the city.

In a statement released on LASEPA’s official handle, the agency urged the aforementioned establishments to adhere to recommended sound levels in order to prevent noise pollution.

The agency emphasized the dangers of excessive noise, highlighting its negative impact on the tranquility and well-being of communities.

“It is crucial that sound levels are kept within acceptable limits as a sign of consideration for our neighborhoods,” the statement read.

“Together, we can enjoy our spaces without causing unnecessary disturbances and promote a quieter and more peaceful environment.”

LASEPA supported its warning by drawing attention to Section 199 Sub-sections k, l, and m of the Lagos State law, specifically relating to noise pollution.

“Under Section 199 Sub-sections k, l, and m, the agency has the authority to establish regulations on (k) noise standards for any product or class that emits noise capable of adversely affecting public health or welfare; (l) noise standards for any product or class that is sold based on its effectiveness in reducing noise; and (m) noise pollution standards in residential, religious, commercial, industrial, or any other premises with the aim of controlling the psychological and physiological effects of noise on humans, as well as the effects of noise on domestic animals, wildlife, and property,” the statement explained.
