Over 99,000 Nigerian Students Pursue Higher Education Abroad in Five Years, Says Minister

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that a staggering 99,985 Nigerian students have left the country to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2022. This statistic was shared during the opening ceremony of the 2023 University of Lagos International Week, which took place in Lagos on Monday.

Breaking Borders of Partnership

Themed “Breaking the Borders of Partnership,” the international week aims to foster cooperation and collaboration among universities across different nations. It serves as a platform for academic discourse and exchange of ideas.

The minister expressed his delight at the growing number of Nigerian students who have secured scholarships for postgraduate and PhD degrees abroad. He emphasized the importance of supporting these students in their pursuit of knowledge and success, as they not only represent Nigeria but also contribute to its future development.

Seeking Knowledge and Self-Advancement

According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), nearly 100,000 Nigerian students enrolled in universities in the United Kingdom during the period from 2017 to 2022. While some may argue that a significant portion of these students left for other reasons, it cannot be denied that many of them embarked on this journey with a genuine thirst for knowledge and personal growth.

Minister Tunji-Ojo raised a valid question regarding the difficulties Nigerian students face in obtaining international passports, despite having paid the necessary fees. He called for measures to streamline the process and remove any unnecessary barriers that hinder students from pursuing their educational aspirations abroad.

Securing a Bright Future

The exodus of Nigerian students to pursue higher education abroad is testament to their determination to excel and make a positive impact in their chosen fields. By venturing beyond Nigeria’s borders, these students foster cultural exchange, acquire valuable skills, and contribute to the global knowledge economy.

As the nation’s youth continue to seek opportunities overseas, it is crucial for Nigeria’s education system and government to prioritize investments in higher education and create an enabling environment that encourages students to excel and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
