The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken a major step towards ensuring the safety and cleanliness of Abuja by impounding 69 vehicles for various offences. This is part of a continuous effort by the FCTA to crack down on illegal operators of commercial vehicles in the city.
Combating Illegal Activities in Abuja
The vehicles were impounded by the FCT Combined Security Task Force at different locations in Abuja. Mr Abdulatef Bello, the Director of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS), stated that these seizures are aimed at improving the security of lives and properties in the city.
The impounded vehicles were found to have committed offences such as wrong parking, operating rickety vehicles, number plate violations, and suspected one chance operators, among others. Mr Bello emphasized that the FCT Administration will not relent in its efforts to keep the city free from all forms of nuisance.
The owners of the impounded vehicles will be prosecuted by the FCT Mobile Court, which is situated within the premises of the DRTS. Additionally, three vehicle owners suspected to be involved in one chance operations will be handed over to the police for further prosecution.
Tackling Transportation Challenges
Mr Bello attributed the rise in one chance operators to the ineffective mass transportation system in the city. To address this challenge, the FCTA has intensified its efforts to curb this menace. Mr Peter Olumuji, the Secretary of the Command and Control Unit, displayed a sharp object that was seized from one of the suspected one chance operators. He strongly advised road users to only patronize painted taxis to ensure their own safety.
Efforts are currently underway to address the transportation deficit in Abuja. Mr Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of the Department of Development Control, placed the blame for the high rate of criminal activities in the FCT on indiscipline. He reiterated the commitment of the FCTA to continuously educate road users on the importance of being cautious when using taxis, so as not to become victims of one chance operators.
Residents were particularly advised against patronizing unpainted taxis or those without number plates. The FCTA remains dedicated to enhancing the safety and security of all residents and visitors to Abuja.
