In response to the precarious security situation in Borno State, the government has taken the decisive step to impose a ban on all mining activities in the region. This strategic move comes as part of the state’s concerted efforts to address the escalating insecurity and prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens.
Prof. Usman Tar, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, conveyed this critical decision through an official statement issued in Maiduguri on Friday. Stressing the urgency and importance of the matter, he stated, “The state government is actively engaged in mapping and securing the mining sites in order to establish a foundation of law, order, and the preservation of lives.”
Furthermore, Prof. Tar emphasized that the government is currently developing a comprehensive governance protocol specifically tailored to the mining sector in Borno. This protocol will serve as a framework to guide all stakeholders and ensure transparency, accountability, and efficient operations within the industry.
With the imminent release of a code of conduct and standard operating procedures for the mining value chain, the state government aims to provide clear guidelines that will govern the activities and conduct of individuals and organizations involved in the mining sector. Prof. Tar sternly cautioned all stakeholders to adhere to the ban, declaring, “Any contravention of this directive will be met with the full force of the law.”
As Borno State remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining law and order, it is expected that this decisive action will contribute significantly to restoring peace and stability in the state. The government’s unwavering dedication to enhancing security measures and protecting its citizens is a testament to its resolute stance against the menace of insecurity.
