Lagos State Government Takes Action: Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market Sealed Due to Environmental Malfeasance

The Lagos State government has taken a decisive step by sealing both the Mile 12 International Market and the Owode Onirin Market on Friday. The move comes in response to the markets’ contribution to environmental malfeasance in the area.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in Ikeja, the markets were sealed due to several reasons, including the indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse, the filthy environment, and blocked drains. These actions not only pose a threat to public health but also contribute to the degradation of the surrounding ecosystem.

Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, directed the Lagos Waste Management Agency and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) team to seal the markets. This shows the government’s commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of Lagos State.

The Minister further elaborated on the reasons behind the closures, stating, “The actions are a direct response to the illegal and indiscriminate parking and abandonment of trucks on the highway leading to the two markets. This has resulted in a significant hindrance to the free flow of traffic in the area.”

It is crucial for the relevant authorities to take such measures to maintain a clean and hazard-free environment for the citizens of Lagos. By sealing these markets, the government aims to deter further environmental misconduct and encourage businesses to operate responsibly.

Now, more than ever, it is imperative for market traders and residents alike to adhere to proper waste management practices and take responsibility for keeping the environment clean. The closure of these markets serves as a stern reminder that every individual has a role to play in preserving the ecological integrity of Lagos State.
