The bill to amend the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Act has successfully passed its first reading on the floor of the Senate, according to Senator Wasiu Sanni, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport. Senator Sanni made this announcement during a working visit by the committee to NIMASA’s operational offices in Lagos.
Senator Sanni emphasized that the Senate is dedicated to formulating policies that will ensure Nigerians reap the benefits of the blue economy. He stressed the importance of a thorough evaluation of the existing maritime legal framework in order to identify any gaps that may require review.
Assuring NIMASA and the maritime sector, Senator Sanni expressed the Senate’s commitment to support the industry’s growth and development in line with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He stated, “Let me inform you that the bill seeking the amendment of the NIMASA Act has passed its first reading on the floor of the Senate. We are with you on this journey and will fully support your vision as long as it enhances the potential of the maritime sector for national growth and development. With the establishment of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry by Mr. President, it is clear that the maritime industry has a vital role to play in nation-building. We must align with the president’s vision and support the government in building a better country for all Nigerians.”
During the visit, Senator Abdul Ningi, a member of the committee, commended the management of NIMASA for its significant progress over the years. He acknowledged the agency’s achievements, stating, “I have visited this agency over the years, and I must note that much progress has been made. You have done very well.”
Dr. Bashir Jamoh, the Director General of NIMASA, emphasized the agency’s commitment to human capacity and infrastructural development, with the aim of growing the Nigerian blue economy. Dr. Jamoh highlighted that a well-developed marine and blue economy could generate enough revenue to support Nigeria’s annual budget, as it encompasses all economic activities associated with the oceans and seas.
Furthermore, Dr. Jamoh assured that NIMASA is diligently working towards securing the nation’s waters and the Gulf of Guinea. He mentioned that appropriated funds are being utilized judiciously, evident in the agency’s investment in infrastructure. Dr. Jamoh added, “We will continue in the direction President Bola Tinubu has set with the creation of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry.”
The passage of the NIMASA Act amendment bill’s first reading is a significant step towards enhancing the maritime industry and harnessing its potential for the growth and development of Nigeria.
