The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has recently taken decisive action by sealing four filling stations in Cross River State. These stations were found to be operating without a valid license and engaged in irregularities, leading to serious concerns about product under-dispensing.
Routine Inspection Unveils Violations
The NMDPRA conducted a thorough two-day routine inspection, visiting over 50 filling stations in the state. During this process, the regulatory authority discovered several stations violating industry standards and regulations.
Protecting Consumers and Enforcing Standards
George Ene-Ita, the Regional Coordinator of NMDPRA, shed light on the importance of this exercise. He explained, “As a regulatory authority, it is our responsibility to protect consumers from being taken advantage of by unscrupulous operators. We are committed to ensuring that operators adhere to industry standards and provide accurate measurements.”
Fines Issued and Facilities Sealed
During the inspection, one filling station was discovered to be operating without a valid license. This blatant violation resulted in immediate closure. Furthermore, three other stations were sealed due to under-dispensing products, depriving customers of the full value they paid for. The NMDPRA issued warnings to other stations found to be in violation during the inspection.
Business as Usual No More
Ene-Ita emphasized that operating without a valid license is no longer acceptable in Cross River State. He stated, “Opening a petroleum facility without due process is no longer tolerated. We are prioritizing environmental protection, ensuring the safety of lives and property, and upholding industry standards. Proper licensing is crucial for maintaining order and accountability in this delicate industry.”
Locations of the Sealed Filling Stations
The filling stations that were sealed are located in Calabar South and Municipality Local Government Area of Cross River State.
This action by the NMDPRA sends a strong message to petroleum operators that compliance with regulations is not optional. The continued efforts of the Nigerian government and regulatory agencies like the NMDPRA aim to protect consumers and ensure fair practices within the petroleum industry.
