Hon Ifeyinwa Obinabo, Commissioner for Women Affairs in Anambra State, speaks out about the worrisome increase in cases of rape, illegal child adoption, prostitution, trafficking, and other related offenses. She emphasizes that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is committed to putting an end to these illegal activities. In this interview with Media Talk Africa, Hon Obinabo shares her experiences and sheds light on the challenges faced in the fight against these crimes. Here are the excerpts:
The Most Tasking Job
When asked about the most challenging aspect of her role, Hon Obinabo explains that every case comes with its own set of difficulties. She acknowledges that these crime syndicates are often composed of clever individuals who try to outsmart law enforcement. However, by staying focused and asking the right questions, the criminals can be exposed. She also credits the unwavering support of Governor Soludo, who is always willing to listen and provide assistance when necessary. With the governor’s backing, they can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Hon Obinabo recounts a particularly difficult case involving Madam Ukwu Venza, a notorious child prostitution ring leader, praising Governor Soludo’s attention to detail and his willingness to support their efforts.
Challenges Faced
Hon Obinabo identifies two major challenges: the reluctance of victims to come forward and societal biases that favor men over women. Many women believe that the injustices they face are inevitable due to their gender. Additionally, cultural norms often discourage women from holding their husbands accountable for their wrongdoings. Furthermore, the prevalence of social media has influenced the rise in rape cases and the adoption of foreign practices that are against the law. Hon Obinabo stresses the importance of addressing these challenges and educating the public about their rights and responsibilities.
Funding and Passion
In response to questions about additional funding, Hon Obinabo clarifies that her ministry operates solely on the mandate given by Governor Soludo. She also highlights the significance of passion in working with the governor, as he does not tolerate failure and expects appointees to approach their duties with utmost dedication. Each member of his team was carefully selected based on their capabilities and commitment. Hon Obinabo cites her personal involvement in similar initiatives before her appointment, emphasizing that she sees this position as an opportunity to make a greater impact.
Convictions and Most Rampant Cases
Hon Obinabo reveals that, so far, her ministry has secured approximately 10 convictions related to rape, child molestation, child prostitution, illegal adoption, child abuse, child labor, and mistreatment of widows. She notes that the slow judicial system in Nigeria often delays the resolution of cases. The most common case she has observed involves men separating from their wives and taking away their children, leaving the women without their rightful custody. However, through advocacy and intervention, the ministry has successfully reunited many mothers with their children.
The Process of Legal Adoption
When discussing legal adoption procedures, Hon Obinabo explains that interested individuals must apply through the ministry. From there, a thorough documentation and inspection process takes place, ensuring the suitability of the prospective adoptive parents and the safety of the child. The commissioner emphasizes that adoption can only be legally finalized through the collaboration of the ministry, the special court designated for child-related matters, and the adoptive parents, with all necessary signatures and investigation procedures in place. She also highlights the importance of knowing the source of the child during the adoption process.
The Arrow of God Orphanage Case
Regarding the illegal adoption activities of Arrow of God Orphanage, Hon Obinabo recalls the absence of necessary documentation, inspections, and involvement of relevant authorities. She describes the stringent procedures and signatures required for an adoption to be authentic. The commissioner clarifies that the proprietor is currently in custody, undergoing trial, and emphasizes that she will be held accountable for her actions. Furthermore, the orphanage has been permanently closed down.
Cost of Legal Adoption
While Hon Obinabo acknowledges the variation in adoption costs depending on the circumstances, she firmly asserts that her ministry does not charge for adoption services. She condemns the practice of selling children, noting that before Governor Soludo’s administration, illegal adoption transactions were prevalent, with exorbitant amounts being exchanged.
Appeal for Support
Hon Obinabo appeals to the public for support in the fight against these crimes. She recognizes that the government cannot combat these issues alone and encourages private individuals to play an active role. She highlights the importance of reporting cases of child abuse, maltreatment of women, and other related offenses, asserting that public involvement is crucial in uncovering and addressing these ills. Hon Obinabo expresses gratitude for those who have already come forward with valuable information, promising swift action to rescue the affected children.
By effectively tackling child prostitution, trafficking, and rape, Hon Ifeyinwa Obinabo and Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s government are striving to create a safer environment for women and children in Anambra State.
