The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, has announced that the Federal Government has established a committee to oversee the dredging of the Niger and Benue rivers.
Prof Utsev made this revelation during the burial ceremony of Elder Haa Orpin in Gboko, Benue State, on Saturday.
He stated that the committee has already begun conducting surveys of the rivers and will soon present its findings and recommendations to the Federal Government for implementation.
By dredging the River Benue, Prof Utsev outlined several benefits that the state would receive, including the prevention of recurring flooding and the enhancement of the local marine economy.
Furthermore, he assured the people of Benue that the government would provide additional interventions, federal appointments, and employment opportunities for the state’s residents.
The minister also expressed his disapproval of the practice among some young people of using social media to attack and defame Benue leaders. He emphasized that such behavior tarnishes the state’s reputation.
He urged the youth of Benue to approach their leaders directly to express their concerns and ideas, highlighting that their leaders are receptive to constructive suggestions and feedback.
Prof Utsev reiterated his previous call for the people of Benue to support President Bola Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, himself, and Governor Hyacinth Alia, in order to enable them to provide the anticipated benefits of democracy to the state.
He described the late Chief Haa Orpin as a respected figure who championed peace, truth, and development. He concluded by praying for eternal rest for his soul.
