Lagos State Government Reopens Mile 12 International Market

The Lagos State Government has given the directive to reopen the Mile 12 International Market, which was temporarily closed on Friday. This decision comes after a comprehensive evaluation of the market’s adherence to environmental regulations, waste management practices, and overall cleanliness.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that the protection of the environment, public health, and safety are non-negotiable principles. The government cannot stand idly by and allow a few individuals to compromise and undermine these values.

“We can no longer remain indifferent to the environment. Our negative attitude towards the environment must cease. The way we treat the environment is reciprocated by how it treats us. We cannot ignore the actions of a few that have a detrimental impact on the larger population,” said Mr Wahab.

As a result of the market’s full compliance with the previously outlined environmental standards and safety measures, the Lagos State Government has promptly given the order to reopen the Mile 12 International Market.

“Despite numerous advocacy and public awareness efforts, the government has been left with no choice but to enforce compliance. This enforcement action will continue because no government takes pleasure in shutting down markets,” Wahab added.

Mr Wahab appealed to the traders to uphold acceptable standards, particularly focusing on maintaining cleanliness and hygiene for both their well-being and that of the general public. He firmly stated that the government will not hesitate to close any market that reverts to unsanitary practices of the past.
