In celebration of World Food Day 2023, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has called on the people of the state to adopt water-conscious practices, choose local and fresh foods, and take measures to reduce food and water wastage. His message, delivered under the theme ‘Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind’, highlights the importance of sustainable water usage and the preservation of aquatic food systems.

Governor Sani expressed his commitment to massive agricultural improvement, innovation, and sustainability, with a keen focus on improving market access. The state government is determined to address the challenge of producing more food with less water, ensuring equitable water distribution, and leaving no one behind.

In a statement issued by Muhammad Lawal Shehu, the Chief Press Secretary, Governor Sani paid tribute to the farmers of the state, hailing them as the heroes of our food security, who persistently provide sustenance and support the local and national economies despite numerous challenges. He acknowledged their dedication and resilience.

The governor also highlighted efforts made to ensure the sustainability of Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities. The state has implemented continuous training and retraining programs for local area mechanics, equipping them with the skills to repair broken-down boreholes in communities. These initiatives have led to the rehabilitation of numerous boreholes, benefiting thousands in rural communities across Kaduna State.

Governor Sani emphasized the wide-ranging impact water pollution has on the food, environment, economy, and health. To combat this, the state government has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to construct ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines, hand wash stations, and undertake borehole construction and rehabilitation projects throughout the state. These efforts are aimed at ensuring safe water sources and promoting good hygiene practices among the populace.

The governor further assured that Kaduna State is committed to achieving the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2024, one year ahead of the national deadline. To this end, seven local government areas were declared free of open defecation by UNICEF in August 2023.

The Kaduna State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (KADRUWASSA) is responsible for implementing programs such as the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (PEWASH) and Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH). These initiatives aim to provide WASH services to communities in the state.

Governor Sani reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing access to clean water and food for communities, particularly in rural areas.
