The Nigerian Government Ensures the Protection of Rights and Press Freedom Amidst the Fight Against Fake News

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reassured its citizens that it is committed to upholding people’s rights and press freedom while combating the menace of fake news and disinformation in the country.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the importance of promoting truthful information.

Mr. Idris urged Nigerians to always advocate for the truth, stating, “Everything that is fake should not be promoted as it can lead to anarchy and destruction of lives and properties. We must condemn fake news in all its forms.”

The Minister also highlighted the significance of credible information providers who utilize various platforms to disseminate reliable news. He encouraged the adoption of their strategies and practices in order to effectively combat fake news without infringing on people’s rights, press freedom, and freedom of information.

“Nigeria will align itself with the international community in curbing fake news vendors,” stated the Minister.
