The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint a substantive Auditor-General of the Federation. This comes after the office has been occupied by an acting director for over a year.
Speaking during the unveiling of the House Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) and a workshop organized for its members by the Africa Development Study Centre (ADSC) in Abuja, Kalu emphasized the sensitivity of the role and the need for a permanent appointment.
Kalu believes that appointing a substantive Auditor-General would send a strong message that the government is committed to pursuing the proper utilization of taxpayers’ money and ensuring transparency and accountability.
In addition, Kalu revealed that the 10th Assembly is dedicated to collaborating with the executive arm of government to promote the prudent use of funds by government agencies.
He stated, “In the 10th Assembly, PAC is committed to deepening engagement with the executive arm of government to ensure that Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) uphold the principles of accountability, transparency, productivity, and proper management of public funds.”
Furthermore, Kalu highlighted the intention of the PAC to strengthen the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation in accordance with global best practices.
