Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, strongly criticized the members of the national assembly, condemning their actions as a flagrant disregard for the law. Her statement follows the widespread discontent among Nigerians over reports that each of the 360 members of the National Assembly will be receiving cars worth about N160 million.
Ezekwesili took to her social media platform on Tuesday to express her outrage, accusing most of the lawmakers of feeling entitled to a life of luxury at the expense of the country’s struggling public treasury. She argued that they had rigged themselves into positions of power and were now shamelessly benefiting from the country’s mismanagement.
She said, “There is a sell-by-date for this recurring rascality, and make no mistake, you will hasten its arrival with your shameful behavior.
“The political class is displaying crass behavior throughout the year, with an utter lack of responsibility. Just because most of you rigged yourselves into public office at the National Assembly, you believe you are entitled to indulge yourselves with the funds from the country’s miserable public treasury, while the majority of poor people struggle to make ends meet.
“This incorrigible bunch of lawbreakers must be held accountable.”
Meanwhile, the Labour Party (LP) expressed its shock, sadness, and disappointment in a statement, denouncing the insensitivity of both the executive and legislative branches of the government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress administration.
The LP condemned the administration’s decision to increase its luxurious lifestyle, which mocks hardworking but underprivileged Nigerians.
Ezekwesili’s tweet on the matter can be seen below:
Crass behavior all year round from an irresponsible political class.
Just because most of you rigged yourselves into public office at the National Assembly, you feel entitled to an indulgent life funded by the miserable public treasury of a country you have misgoverned and where the majority of people are living in poverty…
