In a bid to enhance food production and nutrition security, the Federal Government has unveiled plans to cultivate approximately 70,000 hectares of land across wheat-producing states in Nigeria. This initiative is expected to yield a massive 875,000 tonnes of wheat for the National Food Reserve.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, announced that the government would provide a 50% subsidy to wheat farmers during the upcoming dry season. This move aims to promote food security and self-sufficiency in the nation.
During a recent visit to the Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar-Maje, in Hadejia, Jigawa State, Senator Kyari emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding wheat production for both local consumption and foreign export activities. He also revealed that 40 hectares would be allocated to Jigawa State, while the remaining 30 hectares would be distributed amongst other wheat-producing states.
President Bola Tinubu has pledged his support to enhance food security through the effective utilization of Smart Agriculture. Additionally, the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Umar Namadi, is dedicated to making the state one of the leading wheat producers in the country.
In response to the government’s plans, the Emir of Hadejia, represented by Galadima Hadejia, Alhaji Usman AbdulAziz, urged for prompt action in commencing the wheat cultivation season. He stressed the importance of timely planning for a successful harvest.
This initiative not only demonstrates the government’s commitment to food security, but also empowers wheat farmers across the nation. By providing financial assistance and allocating substantial land, the Federal Government aims to ensure a steady supply of wheat and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the agricultural market.
