Exercise Still Waters: Nigerian Army Ramps Up Security Against Pipeline Vandals and Criminal Activities in Bayelsa

The Nigerian Army has launched Operation Still Waters III, a security operation aimed at combating pipeline vandalism, cultism, illegal oil refining, kidnapping, and other crimes in Bayelsa state. This exercise, inaugurated in Otuokpoti, Ogbia Local Government Area, comes as Nigeria approaches the festive season and Bayelsa gears up for an off-cycle governorship election.

In a speech, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa commended the military for taking proactive measures to enhance security. Recognizing that security is vital for good governance, he emphasized the importance of the operation during the ember months, which historically witness an increase in criminal activities.

Highlighting the state government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security, Governor Diri assured security agencies of unwavering support. He lauded the Chief of Army Staff for sustaining the exercise, noting that previous security operations had significantly contributed to peaceful yuletide celebrations in Bayelsa.

“Since assuming office, I have made the security of our people a top priority,” said Governor Diri. “I have ensured that our citizens can sleep peacefully at night. I appreciate the sacrifices and commitment of our gallant forces, who have played a crucial role in reducing crime in our state.”

Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, outlined the key focus of Exercise Still Waters III. In addition to addressing security challenges during the year-end period, the operation will also tackle cyber warfare and counter negative propaganda on social media.

Maj.-Gen. Abdussalam expressed gratitude to commanders from other security formations for their collaboration and support in maintaining peace and security in the state. He further emphasized the readiness of Nigerian Army personnel to make the ultimate sacrifice for the peace and security of the nation.

As Exercise Still Waters III gets underway in Bayelsa, the Nigerian Army demonstrates its determination to curb criminal activities and secure the people of the state. By actively engaging in initiatives such as this, the military continues to safeguard the well-being and prosperity of Nigeria.
