Nigeria to Review Bilateral Air Service Agreement with Algeria – Aviation Minister, Keyamo

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has revealed that Nigeria will be conducting a comprehensive review of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Algeria. This decision was made known during a courtesy visit by the Algerian Ambassador, Hacine Lalti, to the minister’s office.

In order to expedite the BASA review as requested, the planned meetings between aeronautical engineers from both countries, initially scheduled for December, will be rescheduled to November 7, 2023.

Prior to this visit, the Algerian Ambassador emphasized the need for a review of the agreement signed on July 14, 2022. The request was aimed at including a direct flight to Abuja in the agreement.

The purpose of the BASA is to facilitate the exchange of civil aviation certifications between two countries. By reviewing and updating the agreement, Nigeria and Algeria can enhance their bilateral cooperation in the aviation sector.

During the meeting, the Algerian Ambassador also expressed his country’s interest in partnering with Nigeria and South Africa as key business opportunities. This demonstrates Algeria’s recognition of the economic potential that Nigeria holds within the region.

In a separate event, Minister Keyamo pledged to personally witness the inaugural flight from Uganda to Nigeria. This announcement came during a visit by the Uganda High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Nelson Ocheger. The minister highlighted the longstanding fraternal relationship between Nigeria and Uganda and emphasized that the direct flight would signify the beginning of a fruitful partnership between the two nations.

Furthermore, he emphasized that open skies and unrestricted air travel are crucial for the successful implementation of free trade agreements among African countries. Minister Keyamo’s presence at the inaugural flight will symbolize Nigeria’s commitment to fostering strong ties with Uganda and promoting regional integration through enhanced connectivity.
