An Ilorin-based housewife, Rashidat Quadir, has taken the courageous step of filing for divorce at an Area Court at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin. The reason behind her decision? After 11 long years of being childless and allegedly suffering from a lack of love from her husband, she feels that divorce is the only solution.
In a heartfelt plea, Mrs. Quadir expressed her frustration, saying, “My husband and his parents are frustrating me because I have no children. My man also no longer trusts me.”
According to Mrs. Quadir, her husband’s lack of trust in her has reached extreme levels. He constantly accuses her of infidelity whenever she goes out, believing that she is engaging in extramarital affairs. Her husband has even resorted to forcing her to swear on the name of Almighty Allah and the holy Quran each time she leaves the house. In an alarming invasion of her privacy, he inspects her underwear to check for any signs of sexual activity outside their marriage.
Adding to her misery, Mrs. Quadir shared that her mother-in-law has repeatedly advised her to find another man and move on from their childless marriage. This cruel treatment and emotional torment have pushed her to leave their home three months ago, seeking refuge from the constant threats, frustration, and pain.
However, her husband, the respondent in the case, expressed his desire to continue the marriage. He claimed that he did not chase her out of the house but returned home to find her absence, having gone to the office. He also recalled an incident from six years ago when his parents contacted her family to investigate whether she was the cause of their inability to conceive.
Regarding the issue of trust, the respondent confessed that he began to question his wife’s faithfulness after she refused to engage in sexual relations with him for two weeks. In an attempt to resolve the matter, he visited her parents, who assured him that she would return home and urged him to be patient.
The Presiding Judge, Shehu Ajimobi, granted the respondent additional time to reconcile with his wife, emphasizing the importance of considering divorce as a last resort. Judge Ajimobi advised the husband to make every effort to win his wife back, while also appealing to Mrs. Quadir to exercise patience.
The case has been adjourned to November 6 for a report on the progress of settlement.
