The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is set to embark on a monumental infrastructure project that will significantly transform the rural communities across the six Area Councils. The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, announced plans to construct a total of 30 kilometre roads, with five kilometres in each of the area councils. These road projects are expected to be completed by May 29, 2024, as part of the administration’s commitment to decentralize development efforts and promote inclusive growth.
In a meeting with former Senator Philip Aduda and Zakari Dobi, who represents the All Progressives Congress, Minister Wike revealed the government’s renewed hope agenda to ensure that rural communities are not left behind. This visionary initiative is a testament to President Bola Tinubu’s directive to prioritize the construction of at least five kilometres of roads in each area council within the FCT.
“By constructing these roads, we are bridging the gap between the city centre and the rural areas. It is our responsibility to ensure that development reaches every corner of the FCT,” Minister Wike emphasized. The government recognizes the importance of empowering rural communities and creating equal opportunities for all residents.
During the meeting, Minister Wike commended the spirit of teamwork displayed by Aduda and Dobi, who set aside their political party differences to work towards the development of the FCT. He assured them of his commitment to consult and collaborate with stakeholders from various backgrounds to foster progress and address the needs of the people.
The establishment of the Civil Service Commission for the FCT is a significant step towards eliminating barriers to career progression and rejuvenating hope among residents. In addition, the FCT Administration has taken the bold step of pulling out of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) to facilitate and accelerate development in the capital city.
“We want to rebuild the lost hope among the residents of the FCT, and these measures are part of our comprehensive approach,” Minister Wike stated. The government is fully aware of the challenges faced by residents and is determined to ensure a brighter future for all.
Former Senator Aduda expressed his gratitude to Minister Wike for his outstanding leadership and congratulated him on his appointment. He also extended thanks to President Tinubu for appointing a son of the soil as the Minister of the FCT. Aduda reaffirmed the commitment of himself and his colleagues to work diligently for the development of the FCT, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between political leaders and residents.
This ambitious road construction project and the government’s commitment to equitable development demonstrates a collective effort to unify the FCT, foster economic growth, and improve the quality of life for all residents. With these initiatives, the FCT is poised to become a model for inclusive and sustainable development in Nigeria.
