The ongoing construction work on the newly-reconstructed runway of Minna Airport in Maikunkele, a suburb of Niger State capital, has been criticized by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago. He described the work as shabby and below the expected standard.
During his visit to assess the level of work on the runway, Governor Bago expressed his disappointment with the poor quality of work carried out by the firm responsible for the reconstruction. He emphasized that the contractor had failed to meet the required standard of the contract, despite having received funds.
“The quality of this work is shabby,” Governor Bago stated. “The contractor must return to the site and fix the runway to the agreed standard based on the contractual agreement. We are currently preparing to host the Green Economy Summit and it’s imperative that our airport meets the necessary standards.” The summit is scheduled to take place on October 24 and 25, 2023.
The firm handling the runway project had previously assured the governor of delivering quality work by mid-August, 2023, during one of his inspection visits. However, Governor Bago’s recent assessment revealed otherwise.
Accompanied by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, and other key officials, Governor Bago, visited the site to ascertain the progress of the project. The Governor was joined by Kabir Yusuf Muhammad, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Abdullahi Idris Garba, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, and members of the State Executive Council.
It is important to note that the runway project was awarded by the previous administration in the state, under the federal government’s supervision.
