China Commits to Refinance Abuja-Kano, Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway Projects

In a remarkable development, the Peoples Republic of China has reaffirmed its commitment to refinancing and completing the Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects. This announcement was made by the President of China, Xi Jinping, during a bilateral meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Beijing. The meeting took place at the Belt and Road Initiative Forum (BRI), where Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu.

Since the launch of these crucial railway projects, China had not released funds for their completion due to cutbacks and other commitments. However, China had agreed to provide 85% financing for the construction of the Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects. Nigeria has been responsible for paying the remaining 15% from the inception of the projects through appropriations.

The Chinese President, visibly pleased to receive the Nigerian delegation, pledged increased investments in Nigeria’s power generation and digital economy. Furthermore, he assured President Tinubu that China would continue to support Nigeria’s export growth, particularly in the areas of peanuts and other commodities. Additionally, President Jinping expressed his support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Manifesto and his 8-point economic agenda.

President Jinping also emphasized the importance of China-Nigeria bilateral relations, promising to enhance political support and cooperation in all fields. He highlighted the need for protecting Chinese nationals working in Nigeria and assured President Tinubu that China would stand firm in its commitment to peace in the Sahel region.

Vice-President Shettima, who delivered President Tinubu’s well-wishes, described the rail projects as vital to the progress of Nigeria and its people. He emphasized that the projects would open up the nation’s economy, create jobs, and boost trade and investments across the country.

Speaking at the forum, Vice-President Shettima emphasized the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and China, which dates back to 1971. He expressed the desire to further upgrade the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, highlighting China’s respectful and non-political interference approach.

The Vice-President also acknowledged China’s unwavering support throughout Africa’s post-colonial struggles for independence and the continent’s emancipation efforts. He expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for China’s friendship and mutual cooperation.

The announcement by President Jinping brings renewed hope for the completion of the Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects. This development will not only enhance transportation and connectivity in Nigeria but also contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
