Cervical Cancer: Osun Government Urges Residents to Embrace Vaccination

The Osun State Government has addressed concerns of the public regarding the upcoming mass cervical vaccination campaign. The government assures that the vaccine will effectively mitigate the impact and spread of cervical cancer in the state.

Dr Akindele Adekunle, the Special Adviser to the Osun State Governor on Public Health, made this announcement during a sensitisation programme on mass vaccination against cervical cancer held on Wednesday in Osogbo.

The event aimed to educate and inform key stakeholders about the upcoming vaccination campaign set to commence on October 24, 2023.

Dr Adekunle emphasised the importance of combatting the menace of cervical cancer and highlighted the state government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens as a primary focus of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.

In his remarks, Dr Adekunle stated, “We, as critical partners in the progress of the state and members of society who are closely linked to the grassroots, are here today to address any concerns you may have about receiving the vaccine provided by the government and our development partners. This vaccine will help mitigate the impact and spread of this disease in our state.”

He further urged the public to support the government’s efforts, noting that the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, when administered, effectively protects against cervical cancer.

The Southwest Regional Coordinator of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Isiaka Ayodeji, commended Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to improving the healthcare system in Osun State. He added that Osun is one of only 16 states in the country that will initiate the mass vaccination campaign against cervical cancer on October 24.

This endorsement reflects the government’s dedication to safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly in the realm of preventive healthcare.

As the government prepares for the vaccination campaign, it is essential for all residents of Osun State to familiarise themselves with the benefits of the HPV vaccine and actively support the initiative. By working collectively, the state can effectively combat cervical cancer and safeguard the health of its population.
