Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has made a promising commitment to ensure that retired civil servants in the state receive their entitlements within four months of disengagement from service.
During a meeting with heads of ministries, departments, and agencies in Makurdi on Wednesday, Governor Alia shared this information, highlighting the importance of timely payments for retired civil servants. He stated, “Going forward, retired civil servants have a maximum of 120 days to obtain their entitlements. This is our commitment to them.”
The Governor also emphasized the importance of discipline, hard work, and diligence among government officials. He stressed the need for accountability, transparency, confidentiality, and teamwork within the civil service. Governor Alia remarked, “If you come late to work, leave when you want, or are absent, how do you expect your subordinates to act differently? There must be a drastic change in attitude towards work for optimal results. This is what the people of Benue State expect from us.”
Furthermore, Governor Alia urged civil servants to internalize the values of accountability and confidentiality. He expressed his dedication to the service of the state and encouraged civil servants to embrace their roles with the same commitment. The Governor stated, “You have accepted this job to serve in various capacities. I call for a uniform style of work to justify the prompt payment of salaries. We need to revive, revamp, and reform the civil service, and we must change the current narrative. We must recalibrate to avoid embarrassing situations. Laziness and truancy will not be tolerated in this administration.”
In addition to these expectations, Governor Alia directed civil servants to dress appropriately, illustrating respect for their offices. He commented, “Let us bring back the aura, respect, and value into the civil service.”
