The Enugu State government has reiterated the implementation of a law that prohibits the use of motorcycles, commonly known as okada, in the capital city. In response to concerns raised by the public regarding the rampant and reckless usage of motorcycles, the government has established a taskforce to arrest and prosecute individuals who violate the law.
The Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Emeka Ajogwu, expressed the government’s deep concern over the indiscriminate use of motorcycles within the city. In a press statement released on Thursday, the Commissioner emphasized that the government would not idly stand by and allow this dangerous practice to continue. Furthermore, he reminded the public that the law prohibiting motorcycle usage was still fully in effect, with offenders facing potential imprisonment for one year and the confiscation of their motorcycles.
“The State Government is gravely concerned about the increasing and indiscriminate use of motorcycles by certain lawless individuals in the capital city, despite being fully aware of the existing prohibition,” said Ajogwu.
He further highlighted the numerous inquiries received by the government from concerned members of the public regarding their safety due to the reckless behavior of motorcycle offenders within Enugu metropolis.
“To put an end to such illegal activities, we have established a committee to address this issue and punish offenders. It is imperative for violators to understand that they will face the consequences according to the provisions of the existing law,” Ajogwu stated emphatically.
The Operation of Motorcycles (Prohibition) Law of 2012, specifically sections 3 and 4, clearly forbid the usage of motorcycles in any form within Enugu North, Enugu South, and Enugu East local government areas of the state. Furthermore, the law stipulates appropriate punishments for those who violate it.
Emphasizing the government’s resolve to enforce the law, Ajogwu warned members of the public, especially potential offenders, to cease their criminal activities immediately.
“It is essential for everyone to comprehend that we will not hesitate to take necessary action to ensure compliance with this law. We hereby issue a stern warning to members of the public, particularly those who violate the law, to desist from their unlawful acts,” the statement concluded.
