Kanayo O. Kanayo, a veteran Nollywood actor, has strongly criticized Reno Omokri, the former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, for involving Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in actor Mr Ibu’s illness.
Mr Ibu, also known as John Okafor, recently made a public plea for assistance on the internet as he battles an undisclosed ailment that poses a threat to his leg.
Reno Omokri, in response to the viral video, called on Peter Obi to cover the medical expenses for the ailing actor. He argued that Mr Ibu had declared his support for Obi during the 2023 general elections and, therefore, Obi should step in to help him during this challenging time.
Kanayo, in a video posted on his Instagram page, condemned Reno Omokri’s actions and described them as wicked. He emphasized that giving should be a personal choice and should not be used as a means to criticize others.
“As actors, our hearts go out to our dear colleague, Mr Ibu. His family has put in their best efforts since last year when the news was reported. And now, they have reached out to the public for support,” Kanayo said.
“However, I strongly condemn Reno Omokri for mentioning Peter Obi’s name. It is not a friendly act; it is wicked. I also condemn Uche Maduagwu for speaking about shame on actors. Shame on you too because you do not hold the authority to criticize us,” he continued.
Kanayo stressed that supporting a colleague in need is an individual decision and can also be done privately. He emphasized that no one should use their contribution as a platform to shame or accuse those who haven’t given.
“We appreciate your efforts in giving, but nobody should use it as an opportunity to criticize or indict those who have not given. It is wrong, and we do not support it,” Kanayo remarked.
The actor concluded by urging people to give if they genuinely want to, without using it as an avenue to attack others.
