Governor Bago Attributes Insecurity in Nigeria to the Impact of Climate Change

In a retreat organized for members of the House of Representatives Press Corps in Minna, Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger state pointed to the effect of climate change as a major factor contributing to the current insecurity plaguing the nation. He emphasized that addressing the impact of climate change should be given top priority.

Governor Bago highlighted that Nigeria faces several challenges including floods, desertification, and environmental pollution, and despite efforts to combat these issues, the devastating effects of climate change continue to be recorded year after year. He expressed concern that some of these disasters go underreported, possibly due to the media’s lack of adequate tools and resources to handle them.

As journalists reporting on the parliament where laws are enacted, Governor Bago believes it is essential for the press to acquire the necessary skills and tools to better address climate change. This, he said, would enable the media to set the agenda for the legislature and the executive.

The Governor affirmed that his administration in Niger state would prioritize climate change and work towards mitigating natural and manmade disasters. As part of this commitment, a Green Economy Summit has been scheduled for October 24th to 25th.

“Since assuming office, we have made significant efforts to inform the public about preventive measures to save lives and reduce damage to property and infrastructure,” Governor Bago stated. He expressed his readiness to collaborate with the media to drive this advocacy and develop strategies to prioritize climate change issues.

The Governor added that at the end of the retreat, journalists would be better equipped to inform, educate, and enlighten society on the repercussions of climate change.

Grace Ike, the Chairman of the Press Corps, commended Governor Bago for his innovative ideas in the economy and security sectors. She emphasized the crucial role the media plays in societal development.

The Niger state government’s focus on a Green Economy serves as a significant step in positioning the state amidst the effects of climate change when compared to other states grappling with the issue, Ike added.
