The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new visa policy that will be implemented based on the principle of reciprocity. Under this policy, foreigners seeking to enter Nigeria will be required to pay visa fees equivalent to what their respective countries charge Nigerian citizens.
The Minister of Interior, Olabunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this announcement during the Business Day Conference themed “Nigeria Forward: Catalysing Funding for High Impact Social Projects.” In his keynote address titled “Ministry of Interior Potential High Impact Social Projects,” he highlighted the need to treat foreigners in Nigeria in the same manner that Nigerians are treated in their countries of origin.
Gone are the days when Nigerians faced discrimination and unfair treatment when seeking visas to travel abroad. The current administration aims to foster a more balanced and equitable approach by adopting the principle of give and take.
Minister Olabunmi Tunji-Ojo expressed his stance on visa reciprocity, stating, “Any country that denies Nigerians visa on arrival will receive a similar response from us. We are not a dumping ground; if you demonstrate your usefulness, people will see you as valuable.”
He also mentioned a previous conversation with the director of Turkey’s Centre for Illegal Migration, where he had already indicated that Nigeria would mirror their travel policy in terms of reciprocity.
In addition to the visa reciprocity policy, the Nigerian government plans to enhance border surveillance measures to ensure the safety and security of the country. These measures will help regulate the movement of individuals in and out of Nigeria more effectively.
The adoption of the visa reciprocity policy marks a significant step towards equal treatment for Nigerians traveling abroad. By charging equivalent fees, the government aims to create a balanced playing field that fosters mutual respect and cooperation between nations.
This new visa policy will not only benefit Nigerian citizens but will also stimulate economic growth and encourage foreign investment by showcasing Nigeria as a country that values fairness and reciprocity.
As Nigeria continues to strengthen its position on the global stage, this visa reciprocity policy sends a clear message that the country is determined to protect the rights and interests of its citizens while promoting international cooperation and friendship.
