The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has generously provided 10 Oxygen Concentrators to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and hospitals in Benue State. This remarkable act of benevolence aims to support the healthcare needs of the vulnerable individuals in these camps.
The UNHCR also took the opportunity to commend the Benue State government for its compassionate response in accommodating refugees from Cameroon at the Ikyogen settlement in Kwande local government area. The commendation highlights the harmonious coexistence between the locals and refugees, showcasing the spirit of solidarity and resilience amidst challenging circumstances.
During the visit by a delegation led by Ms. Irene Omendi, the head of the UNHCR Ogoja sub-office, to Governor Hyacinth Alia, the UNHCR expressed its admiration for the state government’s efforts in facilitating the return of IDPs to their ancestral homes. Additionally, Omendi emphasized the importance of providing essential amenities, such as schools and hospitals, to support the displaced persons and called for continued support in capacity building.
Ms. Omendi stated, “Due to the exceptional hospitality extended by the Benue State government, the UNHCR has decided to donate 10 Oxygen Concentrators to both Abande in Ikyogen and St. Monica’s Hospital in Adikpo. This medical intervention aims to improve the health outcomes of the people in these areas.”
Governor Alia responded by expressing his administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence and harmony within the state. He acknowledged the UNHCR’s vital role in saving lives and safeguarding the rights and human dignity of those affected by violence and persecution.
The governor further affirmed, “Through your efforts, you provide these individuals with respect, safety, and the opportunity for a better future away from their original homes, bringing meaning and happiness back into their lives.”
Reiterating his administration’s dedication to facilitating the return of IDPs to their ancestral homes, Governor Alia assured the UNHCR of his government’s commitment to engaging in robust dialogue to find practical solutions to the multiple challenges undermining peace and harmony in the state.
Furthermore, the governor extended his heartfelt appreciation to the UNHCR for donating 10 Oxygen Concentrators to the state, recognizing that this gesture will significantly enhance the healthcare delivery services for the people of Benue State.
