Protecting Nigeria’s Judiciary: A Call to Action by Obiageli Ezekwesili

In a passionate plea, Obiageli Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education, has urged Nigerians to rise up and defend the integral pillars of their nation—the judiciary. Speaking out against the ongoing attempts by politicians to undermine judicial independence, Ezekwesili emphasized the importance of preserving the sanctity of the judiciary for the sake of Nigeria’s future.

Expressing her concerns on her social media platform, X, Ezekwesili implored Nigerians not to allow politicians to dismantle the judiciary without putting up a fight.

Ezekwesili’s powerful statement comes at a crucial time as the Supreme Court prepares to hear appeals filed by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), who are all seeking to overturn President Bola Tinubu’s victory under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Underscoring the significance of an impartial judicial system, Ezekwesili asserted, “The integrity and independence of a country’s judiciary runs much deeper than many realize. It is the bedrock of a constitutional democracy, and we cannot allow politicians to dismantle it without resistance.”

Furthermore, she urged Nigerians to consider the economic implications of a compromised judiciary. “The ability to attract investments and foster economic prosperity hinges on the perception of judicial independence and integrity. Board rooms of investors across the globe prioritize these factors when deciding where to invest their resources,” she noted.

With unwavering determination, Ezekwesili declared, “Anyone who cares about Nigeria must not permit politicians to desecrate our judiciary any longer. Moreover, it is incumbent upon the judiciary itself—justices, judges, and magistrates—to protect their independence at all costs, regardless of personal gain or sacrifice.”
