In a recent announcement, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has confirmed that their Triennial National Delegates Conference will take place from November 24-26, 2023 in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The decision was reached during the Association’s online National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting, which was chaired by NAWOJ President, Ladi Bala, on Thursday, October 19.
Prior to this, the conference was initially scheduled for November 15, 2023, but due to various factors including the Gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States on November 11, 2023, as well as security concerns and logistic challenges, the date was shifted to November 24-26, 2023.
The change in date was proposed by Jadesola Ajibola, Chairperson of the Oyo State Chapter of NAWOJ, and seconded by Bome Samutar, Chairperson of the Gombe State Chapter of NAWOJ.
During the NEC meeting, it was also emphasized that the conference should be held at a suitable and conducive venue, namely the Maryam Babangida Women Development Centre in Abuja.
To ensure continuity in leadership, the tenure of the current Central Working Committee (CWC) of NAWOJ was unanimously extended by the NEC. This decision was made following a motion put forward by Nene Dung, Chairperson of the NAWOJ Plateau State Chapter, and seconded by Elizabeth Achagh, Chairperson of the Benue State Chapter of NAWOJ.
Nene Dung’s motion highlighted the need to adhere to Article 13(1) of the NUJ Constitution, stating that the CWC’s tenure should be extended until the Delegates Conference takes place and the CWC is properly dissolved.
The NEC also expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the Mike Ikeogwu-led Member Credentials Committee in kick-starting the National election process for NAWOJ. The NEC wished the National Secretariat of the Association a successful hosting of the 2023 Triennial National Delegates Conference in Abuja from November 24-26, 2023.
NAWOJ, the gender arm of female journalists in Nigeria, is dedicated to advocating for the inclusion of women, girls, and marginalized individuals in the country.
