Christian Youths in the North Condemn Video Clips Calling for Removal of Wike

The Northern Christian Youth Network (NCYN) has expressed its strong disapproval of what it calls “hateful and segregational statements” that have been circulating following the confirmation of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna on Monday, the National President of NCYN, Comrade Abdulsalam John Tanko, highlighted the issue, stating, “It is not news that, subsequent to his inauguration as the FCT Minister, renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi, made divisive remarks about Wike in a viral video, labeling him as a hater of Northern Nigeria and an infidel. However, what is truly newsworthy is the alarming level of acceptance that some individuals have accorded this hate speech and divisive rhetoric, which aim to sow seeds of discord among Nigerians and reignite religious crises that have long been dormant.”

Comrade Tanko expressed concern over similar remarks made by certain Islamic fundamentalists, which have inundated the media space. He stressed his worry that in present-day Nigeria, those entrusted with fostering unity among different religious groups are instead leading Nigerians down a distressing path of barbarism and promoting bigotry.

“We strongly oppose individuals who seek to tarnish the image of Wike and that of President Bola Tinubu, not based on competence, but due to religious and selfish motives,” Comrade Tanko emphasized. “Nigerians must uphold the principle that the country belongs to all its citizens, irrespective of their religious, ethnic, or political affiliations. Unity and cooperation among all regions are crucial for the progress and development of our nation.”

He further asserted that the position of FCT Minister is not the exclusive preserve of any individual, religion, sect, or creed. The FCT is Nigerian territory, and even its original owners, the Gbagyis, have not expressed any opposition to Wike’s appointment. Comrade Tanko contended that those attempting to undermine the policies of the current administration with regards to ministerial appointments are pursuing a futile and misguided endeavor.

Comrade Tanko called on President Bola Tinubu not to succumb to such baseless blackmail and to continue with the fair and balanced distribution of political appointments, a trend that has been absent in Nigeria for a considerable time. He also urged Wike not to allow these hateful and divisive statements to affect his vision for repositioning the FCT.

“Wike is known for his astuteness, determination, and resilience, so we implore him not to abandon the principles that enabled him to succeed as Governor of Rivers State,” noted Comrade Tanko.

Furthermore, Comrade Tanko stated that Nigeria does not belong solely to Muslims, and he called on the relevant authorities to take action, including making arrests if necessary. He emphasized that Nigeria belongs to Christians, Muslims, and adherents of traditional religions, and therefore, bigotry and zealotry must not be tolerated but firmly denounced. He encouraged the media to continue their efforts in disseminating accurate information and to uphold their role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm.
