Nigeria’s Commitment to SDGs: Tackling Poverty and Disasters, Former Senate President Lawan Emphasizes

Former Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has highlighted Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a means to combat poverty and address the ravages of climate change-induced natural disasters.

A recent report by the United Nations reveals that in 2022 alone, devastating floods claimed the lives of at least 662 people, injured 3,174 individuals, displaced approximately 2.5 million Nigerians, and resulted in the destruction of 200,000 homes across the nation.

In a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, Senator Lawan conveyed his views on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations since the inception of the UN Charter in 1945.

The theme for this year’s commemoration, ‘Equality, Freedom and Justice for All,’ places significant emphasis on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Lawan described the UN as an invaluable platform for fostering multilateral cooperation, advocacy, and action. He urged the Federal Government to remain steadfast in its commitment to the SDGs and collaborate with partners, civil society organizations, and individuals to contribute to global progress.

Reflecting on the achievements thus far and the challenges that lie ahead, Senator Lawan stated, “United Nations Day offers an opportunity for introspection and a determination to forge ahead. Therefore, I implore the Nigerian government to sustain our resolute commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which serve as the foundation for global efforts to create a better future for all.”

By advancing the SDGs, the government can effectively address poverty, hunger, climate change, and a host of other critical issues, ensuring that no one is left behind. Senator Lawan also stressed the importance of continued collaboration with non-governmental partners, civil society organizations, and individuals to drive global progress.

Together, Nigeria can be a catalyst for change, foster a deeper understanding of pressing global issues, and work towards achieving peace and justice for present and future generations.
