The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has announced that the Nigerian Army has successfully acquired electronic warfare capabilities and is now leveraging the convergence of electronic and cyber warfare. This strategic move aims to enhance the army’s ability to counter emerging threats and cyber-attacks.
Lagbaja made this statement during the opening ceremony of the Maiden Cyber Security Workshop of the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare School (NACWS) held in Abuja on Monday. The workshop’s theme, ‘Role of Information Technology to national security against upcoming threats and cyber-attacks,’ emphasizes the importance of harnessing technological advancements to safeguard national interests.
Representing the COAS at the event, Maj.-Gen. Sanusi Dahiru, Deputy Director-General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre (NAHFC), highlighted the army’s previous challenges in acquiring electronic warfare capabilities. These obstacles primarily included the high cost of devices and limited technical expertise within the army. However, through concerted efforts, the Nigerian Army has successfully overcome these limitations.
Lagbaja stressed the crucial role of cybersecurity and cyber warfare in contemporary military operations. He urged the NACWS to focus not only on cybersecurity but also on integrating cyber warfare into military doctrine and tactics. By doing so, the Nigerian Army will gain the expertise and knowledge necessary to confront cyber threats effectively.
Cyber threats have become increasingly rampant, targeting critical infrastructure such as power grids, financial systems, healthcare organizations, and government networks. Lagbaja stated that cyber threats can originate from various sources, including foreign organizations, hacktivists, governments, criminal groups, and individuals. As Nigeria becomes more reliant on cyberspace, it is vital to develop robust defense mechanisms against potential cyber-attacks.
Recognizing the importance of addressing these challenges, the Nigerian Army established the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command (NACWC) and NACWS. These specialized units are dedicated to countering cyber threats and safeguarding Nigeria’s national security interests. The COAS emphasized the need to support and strengthen these initiatives to protect the significant investments made in cybersecurity thus far.
Lagbaja commended the NACWS for its proactive approach in utilizing the tools at its disposal not only for academic excellence but also for providing practical solutions to present and future security challenges. This approach aligns with his commitment to ensuring the Nigerian Army remains at the forefront of defense capabilities.
In closing, Lagbaja urged all participants in the workshop to seize this unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and horizons. By doing so, they can contribute to achieving landmark results for both the Nigerian Army and the nation as a whole.
