The renowned Maiduguri Central Market, fondly referred to as “Monday Market,” has finally reopened its doors to the public after being closed for eight months due to a devastating fire incident.
In the dead of night in February, the market was engulfed in an inferno that obliterated merchandise worth billions of Naira, leaving the traders utterly devastated.
The market’s grand reopening ceremony, presided over by Governor Babagana Zulum on Monday, marked a significant milestone in the revitalization efforts. During his address, Governor Zulum proudly declared that the reconstructed market would now provide a place of business for approximately 9,000 beneficiaries.
In a display of empathy and support, Governor Zulum also granted a two-year rent waiver to the traders who lease shops in the market, bearing witness to the immense losses incurred during the disastrous incident.
Moreover, the governor announced additional assistance in the form of N800 million for 2,825 traders who were not among the beneficiaries of shop allocations in the remodelled market. He assured them that within the next year, they would be allocated shops in a brand new market being constructed in Maiduguri.
“As a result of the remodelling, more than 2,000 traders who had been operating from temporary sites or had resorted to illegally building shops on waterways were unable to secure shops in the market,” Governor Zulum explained.
He further revealed that out of the displaced traders, 185 would receive financial support of N1 million each, while 2,000 others would be granted N300,000 each. An additional 640 individuals would be compensated with N100,000 each, highlighting the government’s commitment to helping them recuperate and rebuild their businesses.
This reinvigorated Maiduguri Central Market not only symbolizes resilience and rebirth; it also signifies hope for the traders and the community at large. The revival of this thriving economic hub will undoubtedly bolster the local economy, rejuvenate livelihoods, and restore the vibrant spirit of Maiduguri.
