US Court Rejects Request to Release Documents on Tinubu, Atiku Appeals

The United States District Court of Columbia has denied a motion requesting the release of documents on President Bola Tinubu, following appeals by former Nigerian presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi. The motion, filed by Aaron Greenspan, sought to compel several US agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Internal Revenue Service (IRS), to release the requested information.

The emergency motion was filed in light of the Nigerian Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing of the appeals by Atiku and Obi. Greenspan argued that the documents were necessary for the Supreme Court proceedings and should be released promptly to ensure their availability.

However, Judge Beryl A. Howell ruled against Greenspan’s request, stating that he had failed to meet the conditions necessary for an emergency hearing. The court found that Greenspan had not presented sufficient evidence to warrant the disclosure of the requested documents and that it would be inappropriate to infringe upon President Tinubu’s privacy rights.

Alongside the request for documents on President Tinubu, Greenspan also requested information on Mueez Adegboyega Akande, who was reported to have passed away on November 16, 2022.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s legal team has filed a separate motion, seeking permission to represent him in the ongoing suit.

This development comes amidst heightened interest in the outcome of the appeals filed by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, attracting attention both in Nigeria and abroad.

As the proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how this legal battle will unfold and what implications it may have for both Nigerian and international politics.
