The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully received and provided assistance to 108 irregular Nigerian migrants who were stranded in the neighbouring country, Niger Republic. This significant development was made known by Mr. Alexander Oturu, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), through a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
Among the stranded Nigerians who were brought back home, there were 32 males, 29 females, 44 children, and three infants. Their safe return was made possible through the concerted efforts of the Nigerian Mission in Niamey and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The 108 migrants were immediately transported to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency camp, as per the existing tripartite agreement between the NCFRMI, IOM, and the agency. This agreement ensures that the returnees are temporarily sheltered and provided with the necessary support, including onward transportation allowances, to enable them to reach their final destinations within Nigeria.
This repatriation exercise represents a commendable collaboration between the Nigerian government, international organizations, and relevant agencies in addressing the needs of stranded Nigerian migrants. By swiftly and efficiently responding to this humanitarian crisis, the Federal Government has once again demonstrated its commitment to the welfare and well-being of its citizens.
The efforts made to facilitate the return and reintegration of these individuals highlight the importance of organized and coordinated efforts in safeguarding the lives and dignity of Nigerians abroad. It is crucial for the government, in partnership with international bodies, to continue prioritizing the protection of vulnerable Nigerian migrants and addressing the underlying causes that force them to embark on dangerous journeys in search of greener pastures.
As Nigeria embraces a future of growth and development, it is imperative that we tackle the root causes of irregular migration through multifaceted approaches. Strengthening economic opportunities, enhancing educational systems, and creating an enabling environment for job creation are vital steps towards curbing the desperation that drives many Nigerians to risk their lives in pursuit of better opportunities in foreign lands.
The successful reception and support provided to these stranded Nigerian migrants signify a promising step in the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return and reintegration of its citizens. It serves as a reminder that each Nigerian life holds immense value and that no effort should be spared in safeguarding the well-being of our people.
