The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has recently welcomed a group of 108 Nigerian migrants who were stranded in Niger Republic. The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Nigerian Mission in Niamey and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), successfully facilitated their return.
According to Alexander Oturu, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator of the NCFRMI, the group consists of 32 males, 29 females, 44 children, and three infants. The migrants were received at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) camp, where a tripartite agreement between the NCFRMI, IOM, and LASEMA ensures the provision of temporary shelter for the returnees.
This vital initiative aligns with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Muhammadu Buhari, as the returnees will be integrated into various government programs, as well as the reintegration programs offered by the UN Migration Agency.
The NCFRMI, working hand in hand with the IOM, aims to not only provide immediate relief and support for these returning migrants but also to assist them in settling back into their communities and regaining their livelihoods.
These individuals, who have endured the hardships and uncertainty of irregular migration, will now have the opportunity to rebuild their lives with the assistance of comprehensive government and international programs. The NCFRMI is committed to ensuring their successful reintegration, as they embrace the prospect of a brighter future.
The Nigerian government recognizes the importance of extending a helping hand to fellow citizens who find themselves in vulnerable situations, both within and outside the borders of the country. By prioritizing the welfare and well-being of these returning migrants, the government is sending a resounding message of compassion, solidarity, and support to all Nigerians.
As Nigeria continues to tackle the complex challenges of migration, initiatives such as this provide a glimmer of hope for a better and safer future. The NCFRMI, in collaboration with its partners, remains steadfast in its dedication to the welfare of Nigerian migrants, ensuring their protection, empowerment, and successful reintegration into society.
With this recent reception of the 108 Nigerian migrants stranded in Niger, the NCFRMI reaffirms its commitment to working diligently to address the various aspects of migration, fostering national unity, and building a prosperous nation for all its citizens.
