Federal Government Initiates Policy Overhaul to Strengthen Contract Awards

In a move towards increased transparency and efficiency, the federal government of Nigeria has initiated a comprehensive review of its contract award policy. The aim of this review, according to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, is to address the issues surrounding contract awards and align government practices with the existing Public Procurement Act.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Prof. Mamman emphasized the central objective of the policy review. He stated that the shift in focus will allow the Federal Executive Council to dedicate more attention to national policy matters of utmost importance.

“The Federal Executive Council has always been perceived as an institution solely responsible for contract awards,” said Prof. Mamman. “Today, the council has made a vital decision to review its policies in that direction. The aim is to ensure full compliance with the Public Procurement Act in the handling of projects and government activities in Nigeria.”

With this policy review, the Public Procurement Council will be empowered to exercise its authority under the act, freeing up the Federal Executive Council to concentrate on crucial national issues and policy-making.

The minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the education, training, and empowerment of adolescent girls across the country. Initially implemented in seven states, the program is now being expanded to encompass 11 additional states.

Through this policy overhaul, the federal government aims to foster a more transparent and accountable system for contract awards, ultimately serving the best interests of the nation. By aligning government practices with the Public Procurement Act, Nigeria can establish a robust framework that promotes fair competition, efficiency, and value for money in the execution of projects and government activities.

This bold initiative signifies the government’s commitment to improve governance and ensure the prudent management of public resources. By undertaking this review, Nigeria takes a significant step towards a more transparent and accountable future.
