The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is committed to creating an enabling environment for the entire broadcasting value chain to unlock its vast potential. This was emphasized by the Director General of NBC, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, during the ongoing Africast 2023 conference with the theme, “Broadcast Content: Synergy, Finance, and Market.”

In his welcome address, Mr. Ebuebu highlighted that the regulatory framework is designed to encourage investments, drive creativity, and foster healthy competition. According to him, the advertising sector plays a critical role in sustaining the ecosystem of the broadcasting industry. To enhance revenue generation in this sector and liberalize content monetization from the dominance of big tech, the NBC aims to establish a robust and accurate viewership measurement system. This will enable advertisers to make data-driven decisions and adequately compensate content creators.

The NBC boss also acknowledged the changing landscape of the industry and the need for the commission to adapt to the evolving trends. He expressed his commitment to ensuring that content creators receive fair rewards regardless of the platform on which their work is delivered. Mr. Ebuebu affirmed his dedication to implementing a policy-driven strategy that will boost the visibility of local content and promote its growth within the broadcasting industry.

Prior to officially opening the event, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, emphasized the significance of the broadcast industry in achieving President Bola Tinubu administration’s economic vision. He noted that broadcasters hold immense economic potential, citing successful examples from around the world. Nigeria, he added, already demonstrates promising progress in terms of its films, music, and culture gaining international recognition while breaking new creative and content boundaries.

The Minister further stressed the importance of focusing on the business and commercial aspects of the industry. He highlighted the need to establish an attractive investment framework and sustainable pipelines for profitability. He expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts between the government’s political will and the private sector’s technical and financial expertise to achieve these objectives.

Africast serves as the premier event for local and global industry players to explore the latest innovative technologies, services, and products, as well as gain insights into accessing the broadcast industry market.
