The Urgent Call for Transparency: EFCC Chairman Urges Staff to Declare Assets

In a bid to strengthen the fight against corruption, the new Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, has called on all staff members of the commission to declare their assets. This directive is in accordance with civil service regulations and procedures and aims to ensure that those entrusted with the task of combating corruption are above reproach.

Speaking at the Corporate Headquarters of the Commission in Abuja, Olukoyede emphasized the importance of leading by example. He declared, “All of us are going to declare our assets, from level 17, downward. I did mine, so there’s no reason for anyone to be afraid to do the same. Even the Commission Secretary did, you all may also have done it in the past, but there’s a need for all of us to do it again.”

The EFCC Boss stressed that this declaration of assets is mandatory for all staff members, and any discrepancies will be thoroughly investigated. “We must live above board by setting the pace with good examples. As anti-corruption fighters, our hands must be clean, so we must declare our assets,” he asserted.

Beyond the call for asset declaration, Olukoyede urged EFCC staff members to focus on the core objective of fighting economic and financial crimes. He highlighted the significance of these efforts in nurturing a robust national economy, creating an enabling environment for increased investment, and strengthening the productive base of our nation. “We must do our job to add value to the nation. Investors must have confidence in the economy, and we must help the country to be governed in an accountable and transparent manner. By doing this, it will offer us a new direction to redeem the image of the nation,” he passionately expressed.

In addition to emphasizing the pursuit of the commission’s mission, Olukoyede implored the staff to prioritize professionalism, integrity, and non-partisanship. “Please, I beg you, let our hands be clean and put our house in order. Some may not like me, but I am going to do the right thing and treat everybody equally irrespective of religion, ethnicity, and region,” he urged.

To motivate the staff, the EFCC Chairman assured them of improved welfare packages, enhanced training opportunities, and equal treatment to foster higher productivity. However, he sternly warned against any compromise in their work or position, declaring that dire consequences would befall those who engage in unsavoury conduct.

Emphasizing the commitment to upholding the rule of law, Olukoyede stated, “The EFCC is a creation of the law. We must do our job in line with the dictates of the law. This is a standard international practice, and we would ensure that it is our established norm.”

As the EFCC continues its tireless efforts in the fight against corruption, this call for asset declaration serves as a crucial step towards maintaining transparency and accountability within the Commission. By adhering to these principles, the EFCC aims to strengthen public trust, attract foreign investment, and ultimately foster socioeconomic growth in Nigeria.
