FG Set to Revolutionize Marine and Blue Economy with New Roadmap

The Federal Government has announced plans to launch a comprehensive roadmap for the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, signaling its commitment to driving sustainable economic transformation and inclusion. This development was revealed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, during a panel discussion at the 29th session of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG).

Addressing the importance of the summit, Minister Oyetola emphasized that the outcomes of the discussions would play a crucial role in positioning Nigeria as a leading hub for maritime trade and ancillary services in Africa. He further highlighted the significance of the maritime sector in facilitating business activities in an import-dependent economy like Nigeria’s.

In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Olujimi Oyetomi, it was stated that the government aims to prioritize the improvement of navigability in Nigerian waters, streamline port operations for 24-hour cargo clearance, and enhance connectivity between ports and hinterlands through efficient road and rail networks.

The challenges facing the maritime sector, including legislative reforms, infrastructure deficits, inefficient port management, and the dominance of foreign shipping companies, are well-known and documented. Minister Oyetola expressed the ministry’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring the competitiveness of Nigerian ports compared to those of our West African neighbors.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy will introduce new business models to enhance capabilities and prioritize continuous dredging of Nigeria’s inland waterways. This move will boost the country’s potential as a leading maritime hub for West and Central Africa.

Furthermore, Minister Oyetola stressed the need for digitalization in port operations, citing global best practices in which seaports have embraced digital solutions to drive efficiency and combat corruption. He emphasized the urgent need for the strict digitalization of all port operations in Nigeria, along with the rehabilitation and upgrade of port facilities.

If Nigeria is to reclaim its rightful place on the global maritime map, there must be a concerted effort to revolutionize Nigerian ports, aligning them with the standards of advanced maritime nations. Minister Oyetola highlighted the importance of securing presidential endorsement for the use of scanners in port operations, as this will eliminate unnecessary delays and human interactions that can lead to corruption.

The launch of the roadmap by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy signifies the government’s commitment to transforming the sector and unleashing its full potential. With these strategic plans in place, Nigeria is set to become a major player in the marine and blue economy, driving sustainable economic growth and fostering inclusivity for all.
