In a proactive move to address the acute shortage of doctors and medical personnel in Cross River State, Governor Bassey Otu has announced a series of measures to bolster the healthcare system. The governor revealed that the government will be recalling retired doctors who are still capable of working, while also extending the services of retiring nurses by three years.
The state’s hospitals have been grappling with a shortage of medical professionals, and with many set to retire by the end of the year, Governor Otu is determined to ensure that there is no gap in healthcare delivery. Dr Henry Egbe, the Commissioner for Health in the state, made this announcement during a press briefing in Calabar.
According to Dr. Egbe, “As many individuals in the health sector will also be retiring from service in 2023, the Governor has made the decision to extend the services of retiring nurses for an additional three years. In addition, the state government is exploring the possibility of bringing back retired doctors who are still capable of contributing to the health sector on a contract basis.”
This strategic move by Governor Otu aims to ensure that the healthcare needs of the people of Cross River State are met, especially in rural areas. The state government plans to engage with the Nigeria Labour Congress and Civil Society Organisations to develop incentives for medical practitioners who are willing to serve in remote communities, pending the governor’s approval.
Dr Felix Archibong, the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association in Cross River State, commended Governor Otu for his visionary leadership and highlighted the importance of creating better working conditions and opportunities for doctors to discourage emigration.
This initiative by Governor Otu demonstrates his commitment to the well-being of the people of Cross River State, as he continues to make meaningful strides in the improvement of the healthcare system. With the recruitment of retired doctors and the extension of nurses’ services, the state is poised to bridge the gap and provide enhanced medical care to all its citizens.
