The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed its concerns over the troubling behavior of police officers who engage in the collection of N100 from motorists in certain areas of the country. CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the NPF, acknowledged the issue in response to a question posed by a user named “X” regarding the extortion of road users by some policemen.
Describing the actions as pure corruption, Adejobi emphasized that such behavior brings disgrace to the force and does not reflect the values and standards that the police uphold. He contended that the negative perception and animosity towards the police force that some Nigerians harbor can be attributed to the activities of these unruly officers.
In a statement, Adejobi wrote, “Collecting any amount, be it N100 or otherwise, from motorists on the road is an embarrassing practice that is completely unacceptable. These officers, who partake in such misconduct (albeit not all of them), tarnish the reputation of the police force.”
He continued, “It is important to note that the actions of a few rogue officers should not overshadow the larger vision, values, and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force. The consequences for those engaging in corrupt practices and other forms of misconduct will soon catch up with them.”
Adejobi further disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has established a committee to specifically address issues of unprofessionalism within the force. He assured the public that the IGP is dedicated to combating corruption, misconduct, and unprofessional behavior among police officers across the country.
“The IGP strongly disapproves of such actions and is working diligently to tackle these challenges. The outcomes of the IGP’s monitoring team’s operations throughout the country will soon be made public. We have already achieved notable successes in this regard, and this will be an ongoing effort,” Adejobi concluded.
