In a move to enhance the efficiency and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, President Bola Tinubu has made a significant decision. He has approved the appointment of nine new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
These appointments, which are subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate, will see the new RECs serve a term of five years each. President Tinubu’s power to make these appointments is derived from Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, Amended) and Section 6 of the Electoral Act (2022).
The newly appointed RECs are Mr. Isah Shaka Ehimeakne for Edo State, Mr. Bamidele Agbede for Ekiti State, Mr. Jani Adamu Bello for Gombe State, and Dr. Taiye Ilayasu for Kwara State. Joining them are Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi for Lagos State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for Nasarawa State, Prof. Mohammed Yalwa for Niger State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha for Rivers State, and Mr. Abubakar Fawa Dambo for Zamfara State.
Ajuri Ngelale, media aide to President Tinubu, emphasized the expectation that the newly appointed RECs adhere to the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct. These standards align with President Tinubu’s clear intention to promote transparent, fair, and conflict-free electoral practices in Nigeria.
