President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, to change his approach in addressing the challenges faced by Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Instead of dwelling on the issues, Tinubu wants Pate to actively engage with development partners to implement new reforms that will enhance the health and well-being of Nigerians.
This directive was given during a meeting between President Tinubu and Minister Pate at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. Specifically, Tinubu urged Pate to spearhead a comprehensive program aimed at improving population health outcomes. This ambitious initiative would leverage the basic healthcare provision fund as a foundation for revamping the primary healthcare system.
Furthermore, Tinubu emphasized the importance of fostering effective collaborations between state governments, community leaders, and traditional leaders. By strengthening these relationships, the aim is to provide Nigerians with better quality healthcare services that address their concerns, be it malaria, immunization, maternal and child health, or reproductive health, among others.
Pate, accompanied by Prof Seniat Fisseha, a development partner affiliated with the Susan-Buff Foundation, confirmed that plans are already underway to establish a social action fund to reach communities. The objective is to earn the trust of community members in order to empower and support them in resolving simple yet pervasive issues affecting those at the grassroots level.
In his statement, Pate highlighted the discussion with President Tinubu, recognizing the President’s unwavering commitment to improving the health and well-being of Nigerians as part of his renewed hope agenda. Pate conveyed that the President has given the green light for three important steps to be taken, with an emphasis on action rather than words. This includes the pursuit of a far-reaching sector-wide program to enhance population health outcomes. By collaborating with state governments, community leaders, traditional leaders, and development partners, this program aims to address key issues such as malaria, immunization, maternal and child health, and reproductive health, all of which have direct implications for the health and well-being of Nigerians.
Pate also mentioned the second item on the agenda, which involves unlocking the value chain within the healthcare industry. President Tinubu has approved a presidential initiative to drive the medical industrialization agenda with clear targets. This initiative necessitates close collaboration between the public and private sectors. While the government provides the enabling environment, the private sector must step up to ensure the production of vital healthcare resources that cater to Nigeria’s health and well-being, while simultaneously creating economic value and generating employment opportunities.
The meeting between President Tinubu and Minister Pate marks a significant step towards revitalizing Nigeria’s healthcare sector. The commitment to implementing comprehensive reforms and improving service delivery reflects a shared vision to prioritize the health and well-being of all Nigerians. With the support of development partners like the Susan-Buff Foundation and collaborative efforts with state governments, community leaders, and traditional leaders, Nigeria is poised to achieve significant advancements in the field of healthcare.+
