Renowned Ethiopian Professor Gebisa Ejeta Honored with US National Medal of Science

On Tuesday, the prestigious National Medal of Science was bestowed upon Professor Gebisa Ejeta, an Ethiopian-born academic renowned for his groundbreaking work in the field of plant breeding and genetics. This esteemed accolade, the highest recognition for scientific achievement in the United States, was presented to Professor Ejeta by President Joe Biden himself.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) wasted no time in expressing their heartfelt congratulations to Professor Ejeta. Taking to social media, MoFA stated, “Our congratulations go out to Ethiopian-born Gebisa Ejeta, Distinguished Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetics, who was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Joe Biden yesterday.”

Purdue University, where Professor Ejeta currently serves as a Distinguished Professor, also joined in celebrating his remarkable achievement. They described him as one of the most influential geneticists in the world, a visionary leader in the field of food security research, and a source of inspiration for the entire Purdue community.

Purdue University President Mung Chiang expressed his delight and pride at Professor Ejeta’s recognition, stating, “Our university celebrates another prestigious and well-deserved honor, bestowed upon Gebisa by the President of the United States. I am truly delighted to stand alongside him as a representative of our university at the White House ceremony today.”

Being one of the world’s leading experts in sorghum, a vital grain used for both human and livestock consumption, Professor Ejeta’s research has made significant contributions to global food security. In fact, he was awarded the World Food Prize in 2019 for his groundbreaking work in developing sorghum hybrids resistant to drought and the destructive Striga weed. As a result of his efforts, sorghum production has seen a remarkable increase, providing sustenance for millions across sub-Saharan Africa.

President Biden, in his role as the bestower of the National Medal of Science, recognized nine exceptional individuals for their outstanding contributions to various scientific disciplines such as biology and computer science. Established by Congress in 1959 and overseen by the U.S. National Science Foundation, this esteemed award aims to acknowledge and honor exemplary scientific achievements.
