The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Musa Aliyu as the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). This confirmation came after the Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti), presented a motion for Aliyu’s appointment during the Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday.
Sen. Bamidele highlighted that the President, Bola Tinubu, had requested Aliyu’s confirmation based on the provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Establishment Act, 2000. The motion also sought confirmation for the appointment of Saka Suleiman and Prof. Gaji Dantata as members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission, in line with the relevant sections and paragraphs of the Nigerian Constitution.
In order to facilitate the screening process, the Senate suspended its rule to allow the nominees and other guests to enter the chamber. Sen. Abdullahi Gumel, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), led the nominees into the chamber.
During their screening, the nominees provided a detailed account of their career profiles and professional experiences. Musa Aliyu, who currently serves as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in Jigawa, shared his achievements in implementing significant judicial reforms since September 2019.
Following the screening process, the Senate confirmed the appointments of Prof. Gaji Dantata and Saka Suleiman as members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission, representing Kano and Kwara respectively.
In his closing remarks, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, emphasized that their appointment is a call to serve the nation. He urged the newly confirmed officials not to disappoint the President and the Nigerian people, while encouraging them to bring their expertise and dedication to serve the country.
