‘I’m not competitive with my music’ – Tems boasts

In a recent interview with Hot 97 FM, New York, Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, expressed her belief that her only competition in the music industry is herself.

According to Tems, she does not view other artists as competitors since she considers herself to be unique and unparalleled.

“I’m competitive within myself, but I’m not competitive with other artists. Nobody can compete with me,” the Oscar-nominated diva confidently stated.

Tems emphasized her commitment to staying true to herself and producing music that resonates with her listeners.

“I’m original. My music is an expression of myself and is meant for those who can relate to it. It serves as my personal outlet,” she explained.

She went on to share the story of how she discovered her passion for music, revealing that it was born out of a need to express herself when she felt isolated.

“I started making music because I didn’t have friends. I had things to say, but no one to say them to. So, I would sing it, write it in a song, and record it on my phone. This became my routine for years,” Tems disclosed.

Despite the recognition and acclaim she has garnered, Tems admitted that she never anticipated such success; all she wanted was to sing.

“I never imagined receiving all these accolades. I simply wanted to use my voice and share my music,” she confessed.
