Governor Alia Emphasizes the Role of Research in Fostering Societal Advancement

The Governor of Benue State, Rev Hyacinth Alia, has underscored the significance of research as an essential academic pursuit that drives societal growth and development.

Governor Alia expressed his views during the 37th inaugural lecture at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he delivered a lecture titled, “the Developmental State and Industrialization In Nigeria: Lessons From South Korea.”

While being represented by his deputy, Barr Sam Ode, the governor commended the remarkable progress of the institution and praised Professor Eugene Aliegba, a renowned Professor of Political Economy and Development Studies at the university, for his invaluable contributions to the educational landscape of Nigeria, especially in Benue State.

The Governor further remarked that the state government, under his leadership, intends to leverage Professor Aliegba’s wealth of experience to achieve significant growth and development in the sector.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen Dr George Akume, represented by Dr John Tsuwa, also spoke at the event, affirming that the lecture theme was timely and aligns with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

The SGF lauded Professor Aliegba’s remarkable intellectual prowess, which has gained recognition from both the academic and political spheres.

Another distinguished guest, former Senator Gabriel Suswam, who previously represented Benue North East, expressed his satisfaction with Professor Aliegba’s contributions during his tenure as Commissioner in Benue State. Senator Suswam encouraged upcoming lecturers at the university to emulate the culture of academic excellence upheld by Professor Aliegba.

Meanwhile, during his presentation, Professor Aliegba, an expert in Political Economy and Development Studies, highlighted the need for the appointment of highly skilled individuals in critical sectors to drive the desired results. He also criticized non-performance by politicians and called for a change in attitude within Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing the importance of embracing technical education to bolster the country’s industrial growth.

In his vote of thanks, the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Prof Suleiman Bala, expressed his appreciation to all attendees. He revealed that Professor Aliegba’s exceptional qualities have played a pivotal role in the establishment of the university’s Centre for European Studies, where he serves as the pioneer Director.

The lecture attracted high-profile dignitaries from within Nigeria and the diaspora, including members of the Benue State Executive Council, Vice Chancellors of various universities, and the political class.
