Ilorin – Issa Aremu, the Director General of Micheal Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin, has advised Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) to demonstrate statesmanship in the aftermath of the Supreme Court judgment.
The Supreme Court recently delivered a verdict affirming President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the 2023 presidential election. In response to this judgment, Mr Aremu shared his thoughts with newsmen during an interview in Ilorin.
He emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision demonstrates the strength of Nigeria’s democracy. Mr Aremu pointed out that while disputes are inevitable in any election, the crucial factor is that Nigerians have a robust process in place to resolve these disputes.
Commending the judiciary for their attentiveness to both complainants and defendants, Mr Aremu lauded the Supreme Court for upholding the integrity of the nation’s democratic process. He asserted that resorting to violence and chaos is not a viable alternative, emphasizing that the court process is the only way forward.
With the verdict of the Supreme Court, Mr Aremu called on Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to exhibit statesmanship. He acknowledged President Tinubu’s statement on the judgment, in which he called on Nigerians from all political parties to unite in pursuit of the nation’s development agenda.
According to Mr Aremu, the president’s statement highlights the importance of good governance. He emphasized that without the collective efforts of all stakeholders, good governance cannot be achieved. Now that the time for politics has passed, Mr Aremu stressed that it is crucial for all parties to prioritize good governance.
Moreover, Mr Aremu urged the other candidates who took their cases to court to follow suit and display statesmanship. He emphasized the principle that one good turn deserves another, and called for winners and losers to show respect and friendship towards one another. In his view, the success of democracy should be celebrated by all, as it benefits every Nigerian citizen.
As Nigeria moves forward from this significant judgment, it is imperative for politicians to focus on unity, development, and good governance. The Supreme Court’s decision marks a milestone in the nation’s democratic journey, underscoring the importance of the rule of law and the judiciary’s crucial role in upholding the democratic process.
